As Shekita McBroom walked down the church aisle in Washington toward her daughter’s body, mourners could see signs of Jayla McBroom’s youth throughout the sanctuary. A flowery, bright pink sign with ‘JAYLA’ in white letters stood over the 17-year-old’s casket. A celebration of life program designed in bright pink – Jayla’s favorite color – highlighted her love for her mom’s banana pudding, Cardi B and boxing.
