DISTRICT ATTORNEY GETTING TOUGH ON IMPAIRED DRIVERS

Friday the Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon along with his Chief Prosecutor over vehicular crimes met with Constable Rowdy Haden and others to announce that there is going to be NO REFUSAL on impaired drivers every weekend this summer. If a driver is stopped and believed to be impaired the officer will transport that person to a medical facility for a blood sample. If that person refuses they will contact the District Attorneys Office and a search warrant will be drawn up. An on-call judge will then sign the warrant and a blood sample will be taken. The DWI numbers have grown this year and Constable Hayden has added a DWI unit to his staff. He has also asked Montgomery County Commissioners during this current budget hearing for additional officers to staff the DWI unit. With us being only halfway through the month the numbers are growing on impaired drivers. 108 arrests of which 70 are first-time offenders with the remaining repeat offenders,. With many DPS Troopers on the border, the numbers of DPS arrests seem less. However. many law enforcement agencies have picked up the slack to enforce traffic laws and look for impaired drivers.
