When Stephanie Land’s memoir “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive” came out in January 2019, she didn’t expect anyone to pay attention. “(The success) was surprising to me, I didn’t expect people to pay any attention to a single mother living in poverty, working as a house cleaner and struggling to make ends meet,” she told those gathered at Friday’s Community Assistance Center 2022 Legacy Awards luncheon. “It was an isolating and invisible existence.”
