On Tuesday just before 3:30 pm, East Montgomery County Fire Department along with Porter and New Caney responded to a reported house fire in the 19700 block of Myers Road in New Caney. The caller was passing by when they saw flames. The resident was not home at the time of the fire. EMC Fire arrived first with heavy fire on the front porch spreading to the house. As crews began to fight the blaze EMC Chief Howard Rinewalt saw the Christmas tree through the front window. Knowing there could be gifts under that tree he immediately had a crew go in and investigate. Within seconds firefighters came out first with the tree, but right behind it arms full of gifts that were not yet damaged. Crews continued to battle the blaze and were able to stop the flames in the front of the home and attic area. As they were finishing up the homeowner arrived. They believe a heat lamp they left on the front porch for their puppies may have ignited the blaze. The Montgomery County Fire Marshals Office is investigating. The puppies were safe in a kennel in the back.
