Lucky Derby Day draws lots of drama, high jinks from Conroe Noon Lions members

This past Wednesday was not just any ordinary Conroe Noon Lions Club meeting. It was THE day. LUCKY DERBY DAY – our annual car raffle! If you have never experienced one, put it on your bucket list. This year’s theme was “Let’s Make A Deal.” Monte Hall (aka Bryan Rennell) orchestrated the event with the panache of a seasoned game show host. Announcer Wink Martindale (aka Warner Phelps) pontificated his way through the show with witty remarks and timely sarcasm worthy of a Hollywood showman. The lovely and vivacious Vanna White (aka Becca Ellis) made a celebrity appearance to guide and assist winners to their prizes. Speaking of winners, there were 26 of them. That’s one for every 25 tickets sold. Each prize had a value of $200 or more. Pretty good return on the $100 investment. The 26 final contestants were drawn out of the tumbler at the meeting the week before. The Luck Derby game began with 22 contestants each called up one at a time to choose a folder at which time they had no idea what they would win. The prize was revealed for all to see when they opened their folder. Vanna then escorted them to their prize. As contestants were called up, they had a choice to choose a folder or steal a previously won prize. You can only imagine the drama and entertainment that resulted.
