Prosecutors in Harris and Montgomery counties are using a new law to file murder charges against those who provide fatal doses of fentanyl. Montgomery County DA Brett Ligon says the law is crucial in combating deaths from fentanyl. Garrett Moore, with the Harris County DA’s Office, hopes the harsher penalties will deter fentanyl distribution. However, Emily Kaltenbach from the Drug Policy Alliance argues that these laws don’t reduce overdose fatalities and may worsen health outcomes. The law, effective since September 2023, allows for first-degree murder charges with penalties ranging from 5 years to life in prison.
