MoCo, Baltimore ask state to direct part of budget surplus to prevent evictions. Montgomery County has joined Baltimore City in asking the state to help provide rental assistance to residents. In Montgomery County, rent eats up at least 30% of monthly income for close to half of all residents, and the number of evictions has tripled compared to last year. There appears to be support for new housing assistance in the Maryland House of Delegates, but new fiscal projections have made lawmakers cautious about making any decision about spending the existing surplus.
