By the time September arrives we are all ready for cooler weather and rain. After all, it is the beginning of fall gardening season, our best gardening season. To help landscapes get through the drought, add organic matter to flower beds and vegetable gardens. Compost will increase the moisture holding capacity of the soil. A two to three-inch layer of shredded leaves, pine straw or native hardwood mulch will moderate soil temperatures and hold in moisture. The mulch also blocks light from reaching the soil, preventing most weed seeds from germinating.
