VIDEO STORIES FROM JULY 16TH OF YEARS PAST

A group of concerned citizens of Cleveland arrived at the Cleveland City Hall Monday morning with a petition in hand. That petition calls for the Cleveland City Council to place the Red Light Camera issue on the ballot. They say that in twenty-five days they had just as many crashes at red light-controlled intersections compared to the same number of crashes in the eighteen months preceding the installation of the cameras. Cleveland has earned over one million dollars since the cameras were installed at several busy intersections around the city. They claim that the red-light cameras actually cause many more rear-end accidents than without the cameras. The city council will hold a special meeting Monday night which was announced last Friday. Organizers feel this may be an attempt to persuade voters to keep the cameras for the next two years and to keep the camera revenue coming in for as long as possible. This option is not acceptable to the voters in Cleveland who have seen accidents at Cleveland camera locations rise dramatically since their installation organizer Byron Schirmbeck said. Aubrey Vaughan said, “If the city council truly thinks the cameras should be discontinued we urge them to vote to immediately end the program at Monday’s council meeting. A lawsuit to compel the city to place this issue on the ballot has already been drafted and is ready to file should the council fail in their obligation to place this petition on the ballot.” Vaughan also believes with such overwhelming support from Cleveland voters there is little doubt that Cleveland will be the fifth Texas City to say “no” to red-light cameras at the ballot. Texas voters have never approved of red light cameras. Over two dozen votes across the country have gone against the cameras.
