Lance Cpl. Armando Hernandez, 20, a graduate of Splendora High School and assigned to Camp Hensen in Okinawa Japan died in what the Marine Corp says is an off-duty accident on June 29, 2021. Hernandez was an electro-optical ordnance repair technician with Ordnance Maintenance Company, 3rd Maintenance Battalion, was pronounced dead at 8 a.m. by medical staff at U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa on Camp Foster, according to a 3rd Marine Logistics Group statement Wednesday. Reports say with the heavy rains in Okinawa Hernandez fell into a sinkhole and was swept away by the waters. “On behalf of all of us at 3rd Maintenance Battalion, I would like to extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to all the family and friends of Lance Cpl. Armando Hernandez,” 3rd Maintenance Battalion commander Lt. Col. Brogan Issitt said in the statement. “His motivation and loyalty earned him the respect of his peers and superiors alike, and his presence will be sorely missed by all.” Hernandez enlisted in the Marines out of Houston, Texas, the statement said. He was promoted to lance corporal on Oct. 1 and had been awarded the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Saturday morning Hernandez returned to Bush Airport. With police from Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Precinct 4 of both Harris and Montgomery County, DPS, and Splendora Police he was escorted to Splendora and through the neighborhood his family lives in. He was then taken to Pat Foley Funeral Home in Houston where services will be later this week. Hundreds of Splendora residents lined the roadway as the procession passed the American flag-lined roadways. Hernandez’s brother is also a United States Marine.
