SEARCH FOR DROWNING VICTIM ON LAKE CONROE CONTINUES

Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable Phil Cash and his Lake Patrol Deputies and divers along with North Montgomery County Fire Department and Conroe Fire Department continue the search for Magnolia resident Austin J. Tasler. Tasler and at least four others were boating on Lake Conroe on Saturday afternoon when three of them jumped into the 60-degree water. The winds were strong at the time and the water was quite rough. Tasler went down and never resurfaced. One of the members of the party threw a life vest in to mark the spot but by the time the call was made and crews arrived on the scene the winds had already moved it quite a distance. Crews are using side-scan sonar and when they believe they have an image a diver goes in to check it. So far several today have been tree stumps. It is unknown what caused him to go down. However in some instances with drownings in cold water, Cold Water Shock happens. This response affects breathing and happens within the first minute. An automatic gasp reflex occurs in response to rapid skin cooling. If the head goes below water, water may be breathed into the lungs, resulting in drowning. Cold incapacitation is another factor. This response occurs within the first five to 15 minutes in cold water. In order to preserve core heat, vasoconstriction takes place decreasing blood flow to the extremities to protect the vital organs. The result is a loss of movement to hands, feet, arms, and legs. Coldwater recoveries sometimes take longer as, unlike warm water where the victim surfaces quicker, the cold preserves the victim somewhat causing the victim to remain down for much longer. Lake Conroe Crews will continue the search until the victim is found.
