VICTIMS OF THURSDAY NIGHT CRASH WHERE WHEEL CAME THROUGH WINDOW IDENTIFIED

The mother of two teens was killed Thursday night in a freak accident in New Caney. About 7:15 pm Thursday Carol Hardy, 52 of Hockley, and her 17-year-old son were traveling south on I-69 near Roman Forest. They were returning from Lufkin where her 17-year-old played three back-to-back baseball games. Something the entire family loved. Her 13-year-old daughter stayed at home. Her son was asleep in the passenger seat of their 2014 GMC pickup. At the same time, a 2004 Dodge 1500 pickup driven by a 16-year-old male from Cleveland was northbound on I-69, also near Roman Forest Drive when the left front wheel separated from the truck and went airborne across the concrete wall and into the windshield of the GMC pickup killing the mother instantly. The driver of the Dodge fought to control his now three-wheeled truck and was finally able to stop just over Roman Forest. The GMC truck veered to the right lane then started to come back when it rear-ended a 2018 Buick LaSabre driven by Christopher Stephens, 42 of New Caney with his three children. The GMC then slid against the wall breaking a left rear wheel off as it slowly stopped. The 17-year-old who had been asleep was awakened by wind and what he thought was rain but in reality, was glass. Multiple calls came into 911. Most of the southbound freeway was closed when emergency equipment from EMCFD and MCHD arrived. Medics transported the father and three children in stable condition to Kingwood Hospital. The 17-year-old was transported to Kingwood also in serious but stable condition. Carol Hardy was pronounced deceased at 8:01 pm on the scene. Montgomery County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Jason Dunn responded to the scene for the inquest. He ordered Eickenhorst Funeral Directors to transport Carol Hardy to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for autopsy. DPS Troopers investigating the crash are trying to determine what caused the wheel to come off of the vehicle. The freeway reopened about 10:30 Thursday night. DPS is asking that anybody who saw the crash and has not yet given a statement to DPS to contact DPS -New Caney Office.
