A peripatetic German was Gustav Dresel, traveling, roving over the land of Montgomery County in 1839. The lifestyle of the pioneers with whom he came in contact intrigued him; most especially he admired their practicality. “Americans,” Dresel recorded in his journal, “live rather on the solid ground, while with us the whole population is hovering in the higher regions.” He portrayed the Americans as finding a practical idea then quickly proceeding to action, whereas for the European of his day, endless speculation and reformulation without concrete results was the typical scenario.*
