Had death granted my father a few more years I might have understood then what an adventurous, even oddball, Conroeite this affable and popular man was. In the summer of 1966, however, he was whisked away at age 48 in a car-train collision – a suitably flamboyant, if tragic, end – that left his youngest, 13-year-old son with only a few memories of his life and ambitions.
